About the Project

The Mohican-Battenkill Rebuild Project is critically important to the delivery of safe, reliable power to Washington and Saratoga Counties as electric needs have increased over the past few years. This region surrounding Saratoga Springs is the largest growth area in terms of electric load in National Grid’s Upstate New York service territory and the increased demands are being placed on an aging electrical system. In addition, the anticipated expansion of GLOBALFOUNDRIES will place further demands on the system.

National Grid is committed to investing in infrastructure to better serve our customers and future generations and the Mohican-Battenkill Project is one of a number of planned reinforcements designed to address the current and long-range needs of Upstate New York. This $77 million Project will rebuild approximately 14 miles of two existing 115kV electric transmission lines from the Mohican Substation in the Town of Moreau, NY to the Battenkill Substation in the Town of Easton, NY.

National Grid’s proposal was accepted and approved by the New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) in 2013 and the Project is currently under construction. The project traverses portions of the towns of Moreau, Fort Edward, Greenwich and Easton. The current structures will be replaced with self-weathering steel poles with an average height of 85 feet. The Project is performed under the PSC’s Article VII laws and is subject to state oversight and permitting. Construction began on January 28, 2016.

Features & Benefits

  • National Grid is investing $77 million in the communities within the Project area, which will result in increased property tax revenues to the towns.
  • The majority of the Project will be built and operated within existing National Grid transmission corridors, minimizing community and environmental impacts, as well as the need to acquire additional property rights.
  • The Project adds the necessary capacity to maintain reliable electric service to the region and support future economic development.
  • The Project relieves load issues to both commercial and residential customers throughout the region.

Herbicide Information

During the vegetation clearing phase of the Mohican-Battenkill 115kV Rebuild Project, National Grid will employ a variety of Integrated Vegetation Management (IVM) techniques. Mechanical clearing, hand cutting, mowing and selective herbicide applications are a few examples of such techniques. This work will be conducted by NYS Department of Conservation-licensed contractors in site specific locations prescribed by the National Grid Forestry staff. The herbicide application – as part of a planned IVM program – will enable National Grid to create stable, low-growing plant communities that require minimal maintenance. The labels for each of the herbicides to be used can be found below.
